Phonics
Our aim at West Cliff Primary School is that all children will develop a love and enjoyment of reading. We aim to do this by providing a stimulating learning environment that is rich in language and also through exposure to a variety of high quality texts. This is in addition to the teaching of daily phonics sessions across the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. At West Cliff Primary School, we follow the Letters and Sounds document from the Primary National Strategy.
Here is a video explaining how each phoneme (sound) is articulated.

At West Cliff we also offer a weekly phonics club that incorporates and embeds previous learning, utilising a fun and multi-sensory approach
Phonics Screening Check
What is it?
The Phonics Screening Check is used to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1. It is undertaken in June and consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with the class teacher and will be administered in a relaxed and familiar manner. If your child’s score falls below the standard, they will be given extra phonics help and can re-take the Phonics Screening Check in Year 2.
