Transition to Secondary
At the end of Year 6, children transfer to secondary school. Our children are likely to move up to Whitby School (an 11-19 community school offering Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Post-16 provision).
During the autumn term, Year 6 children and their parents are invited to open evenings at Whitby School to meet the staff, tour the building and see what is on offer.
In the spring term, members of staff from Whitby School come to West Cliff to meet our Year 6 cohort, answer any questions and generally prepare them for the next step in their education. The Year 6 teacher will also meet with several Whitby School staff members to share information about each child. They may also begin to arrange any additional activities or early transition for those children who may need extra support and guidance.
In the summer term, a ‘Transfer Week’ is arranged. This is usually in the penultimate week of Year 6 and provides the children with the opportunity to spend some time in their new school. They will meet their form teachers, experience new lessons and learn to follow their individual timetables. This is usually a very successful week that reassures the children and settles any nerves they may have.
